Primalux Institute of Music and Technology is a new school for ages 8 and up based in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. We offer hands-on learning in small groups, catered to the different age groups, from Primalux Juniors (ages 8 – 12) to Primalux Teens (ages 13 – 18) to Primalux Adults (ages 19 and up) helping you grow your skills while working with others in a recording studio.

It’s one class a week,

like learning a musical instrument. In fact, your laptop IS a musical instrument. This means that you can practice from home just like learning piano or guitar or whatever!

What is Primalux Institute of Music and Technology?

Primalux Institute of Music and Technology is a school for anyone ages 13 and up who wants to explore their creativity in music production using the latest tools.

We are focused on the art and science of making impactful music for today. Centrally located in Kelowna, British Columbia, in an active commercial studio featuring an immersive Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 mixing environment.
Who’s the instructor?

The curriculum is designed and taught by veteran composer, musician, producer, and engineer Darryl Neudorf. Darryl is a Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame inductee with several gold and platinum albums, ASCAP and SOCAN awards, a Juno nomination for Engineer of the Year, and two Grammy nominations.

Primalux provides the direct personal mentorship and hands on learning in a fully equipped studio that is never fully achievable in online learning.
What ages are covered?
Where are the lessons taught?

The lessons are taught in Darryl’s inspiring brand-new 7.1.4 Dolby ATMOS studio, where students will learn all aspects of making a compelling and releaseable musical work, from creating, composing, recording, mixing, and mastering. Everything from “organic” live off the floor recordings to heavily manipulated electronic-based music will be covered. Click here to learn more about the studio.
How are the classes structured?

The program revolves around weekly 1 hour lessons in groups of no more than 4 students. Students will take home assignments from each class and be expected to have something to show the following week. There are 4 ways to learn:

1 – the full, year long, 2 term program

2 – modules for more focused learning

3 – Spring, Summer and Winter camps for high school students / “Sessions” for Adults

4 – 1 on 1 hour long tutoring sessions
Why pay for a school when I can learn online for free?

There are so many fantastic, free online resources for learning audio production.

Rather than attempt to compete with the free resources, Primalux incorporates them. We provide focus by carving a guided path through the expansive world of free online resources.

Primalux is an alternative to the institutional approach to audio production education. In today’s world, the bulk of music production is conducted outside of a recording studio environment. You may book into a studio to capture live instrumentation like drums, then take the files and continue working on overdubs at home, and perhaps hire a professional mix engineer to bring it all together at the end.

This reflection of the real world allows us to build a complete curriculum around a single class per week at a similar cost to piano lessons. We can keep things affordable by optimizing studio class time around aspects of audio production that can’t be learned online at home: things like conducting actual recording sessions with chaotic musician dynamics and mixing in a professionally tuned ATMOS and stereo environment and providing the personalized real time hands on mentorship not available on a screen.

Then we give the student weekly assignments that they can do at home, without having to pay for additional class time or lab time using in house assignments and a carefully selected framework of free online resources.
Why this approach?

Darryl designed the curriculum and taught for 7 years at the Audio Recording Academy in Toronto, Ontario. During that time, he learned a lot about how people learn. He found that a mentoring approach with lots of hands-on time was much more successful than a typical school-based approach of an instructor giving lectures.

People, especially young people, only really learn when they’re engaged, interested, and involved.

Music creation and production are usually social experiences. In a studio, it’s usually a few people, so it’s great if you have a group of students who can learn together.

Over the past decade or so, the music production revolution has taken hold. The playing field for music production has levelled out. Grammys for the biggest recordings of the year are increasingly being produced in home environments on affordable software and hardware. Meanwhile, at breakneck speed, AI tools are being revealed that allow for increased productivity and creativity while creating controversy around what is considered art and what is considered “cheating”. Ultimately, we believe that embracing and pushing the boundaries of what technology presents to us can lead to compelling art.
