The Mission
Ever played a great melody but hit a few keys a little late? Don’t delete it! Today we learn how to “snap” our notes onto the grid and use the Piano Roll to fix our mistakes.
1. Capturing the Magic
First, we need to set up our project and get our instruments ready to play.
💻 Logic Pro (Mac)
- Go to File > New and select Empty Project.
- When asked for a track type, choose Software Instrument.
- Open the Musical Typing keyboard by pressing Command + K. Now your computer keys act like piano keys!
- Press K to turn on the Metronome.
- Press R to start recording and play your melody.
- Press Space to stop.
📱 Logic Pro (iPad)
- Tap the [+] on the Projects screen to create a New Project.
- Tap Software Instrument in the New Track dialog.
- Tap the Keyboard icon at the bottom left to open the on-screen keys.
- Tap the Metronome icon at the top to hear the click.
- Tap the red Record button and play the on-screen keys.
- Tap Stop when finished.
2. Inside the Piano Roll
Double-click your recorded region to look inside. Those little green bricks are your notes!
💻 macOS Workflow
- Press P to open the Piano Roll.
- Click and drag a note to change its pitch.
- Hover over the edge of a note to change its length.
- Use the Pencil Tool to draw in missing notes.
📱 iPad Workflow
- Tap the Editors icon (looks like a pair of sliders).
- Use two fingers to pinch and zoom into your notes.
- Tap and drag a note to move it.
- Use the Selection Tool to grab multiple notes at once.
3. Quantize: Finding the Magnet
Quantizing is like using a magnet to pull your notes exactly onto the beat lines. Here is how to find the settings:
💻 Finding it on Mac
- Look at the top left of your screen for the Region Inspector. (Press I if the side bar is missing).
- Find the word “Quantize” near the top of that box.
- Click the word “off” to choose a grid like 1/16 Note.
- Click the “Q” button to apply it immediately!
📱 Finding it on iPad
- Tap your MIDI region to select it.
- Tap the Inspector icon (the circle with an ‘i’ inside).
- Scroll down to find the Quantize section.
- Tap the value to change it to 1/16 Note. The change happens automatically!
🤖 The “Robot”
Setting Quantize to 100% Strength. Everything is mathematically perfect. Great for Techno and EDM!
🥁 The “Groove”
Setting Quantize to 50-70% Strength. It moves notes closer to the line but keeps the “human” feel. Great for Hip Hop and Jazz!
🚀 Assignment: The Fixer
I have put a Logic session called “Messy MIDI” with a track where the timing is all over the place. Save this session and then go to File – “Save As”and call it “Your name Messy MIDI”. Your job is to:
- Step 1: Identify the notes that sound “off” by listening closely.
- Step 2: Select all notes (Cmd+A on Mac / Multi-select on iPad).
- Step 3: Apply 1/16 Note Quantize using the Inspector.
- Step 4: Manually move any notes that snapped to the wrong line.
- Step 5: Shorten notes that are overlapping and sounding “muddy.”
